These many initiatives show that the international community now firmly believes that we must use education to promote the values, behaviors, and lifestyles necessary for a sustainable future. Education for sustainable development is now understood as a process of learning to make choices that take into account the long-term future of the economy, ecology, and social well-being of all communities. Building the capacity for such future-oriented thinking is a central task of education.

Key lessons

Deciding how education should contribute to sustainable development is an important task. In deciding which approaches to education are locally relevant and culturally appropriate, countries, educational institutions, and their communities can consider the following key lessons from discussions and debates about education and sustainable development over the past decade.

- Education for sustainable development must explore the economic, political, and social implications of sustainability by encouraging learners to think critically about their own areas of the world, identify non-viable elements in their own lives, and examine the tensions between conflicting goals. Development strategies that address the unique circumstances of diverse cultures in pursuit of common development goals are critical. Educational approaches must take into account the experiences of indigenous cultures and minorities and recognize and promote their original and significant contributions to the process of sustainable development.

- The path to sustainable development depends more on the development of our moral sense than on the growth of our scientific understanding-important as this is. Education for sustainable development cannot be limited to disciplines that enhance our understanding of the natural world, however valuable they may be. Success in the struggle for sustainable development requires an approach to education that strengthens our commitment to other values-particularly justice and fairness-and an awareness that we share a common destiny with others.

- Ethical values are the most important factor for social coherence and also the most effective means for change and transformation. Ultimately, sustainability will depend on changes in behavior and lifestyles, changes that must be motivated by a change in values and rooted in the cultural and moral principles on which behavior is based. Without such change, even the most enlightened legislation, the cleanest technology, and the most sophisticated research will not be sufficient to move society toward the long-term goal of sustainability.

- The change in lifestyle must be accompanied by the development of an ethical consciousness, so that the inhabitants of rich countries discover in their culture the source of a new and active solidarity that will make it possible to eliminate the widespread poverty that today affects 80% of the world’s population, as well as environmental degradation and other related problems.

- Ethical values are shaped by education in the broadest sense of the word. Education is also important in enabling people to use their ethical values to make informed and ethical decisions. Fundamental societal changes, such as those required for sustainable development, occur either because people feel an ethical imperative to change, or because those in power have the political will to move in that direction and feel that people will follow them.
